Accelerate quantum business advantage with automated error suppression

September 8, 2023

The goal of driving quantum computing forward is to deliver tangible value to enterprise. Today’s quantum computers with over 100 qubits have been shown to have problem-specific advantage. But delivering this advantage to businesses is blocked by one critical challenge: error and decoherence.

In this webinar, Dr Michael Hush, Chief Scientific Officer at Q-CTRL, is joined by Dr Sam Genway, Head of Industries from Capgemini’s Quantum Lab. They explore the biggest opportunities for quantum computing, and how Capgemini is using Q-CTRL's error suppression product, Fire Opal, to deliver advantage to businesses.

Hello, everybody. Welcome to Q-CTRL’s webinar on Fire Opal. Today we're going to talk to you about achieving quantum business advantage with automated error suppression. I'm Michael Hush, Chief Scientific Officer at Q-CTRL, and I have with me here today, Dr. Sam Genway, Head of Industries from Capgemini's Quantum Lab.

Dr. Sam Genway 0:39
Thanks very much, Michael. My role within Capgemini's Quantum lab is focused on leading a research team on applications that are of interest to our clients.

Dr. Michael Hush 1:15
We're looking to go for 45 minutes, starting with a discussion about where we see quantum computing currently, the potential for it to have an impact on business, and the challenges holding it back. After our discussion, we welcome your questions in the Q & A, followed by a short presentation around Fire Opal, our product from Q-CTRL.

Dr. Sam Genway 3:03
We are particularly excited about chemistry and material science applications, spanning areas like carbon capture, battery design, and pharmaceutical development, as they require really accurate simulation.

Dr. Michael Hush 4:24
Can you dive a bit deeper into specific business cases you've been looking at?

Dr. Sam Genway 4:39
We've been doing some work on drug discovery, looking at how quantum algorithms can fit into existing workflows and add value.

Dr. Michael Hush 9:30
What experience have you had trying to run this on a real device?

Dr. Sam Genway 9:55
The value question is interesting as we transition from theoretical applications to real devices. We're also exploring how we can use Fire Opal to improve performance.

Dr. Michael Hush 16:49
Fire Opal provides an automated error suppression solution which can remove the majority of noise on quantum devices and get you to the correct solution quicker with less resources.

Dr. Michael Hush 25:51
Fire Opal allows you to run deeper circuits, ensuring accurate results in quantum chemistry simulations, improving overall performance and insight.

Key Points

  • Fire Opal can automate error suppression, integrating seamlessly with existing workflows.
  • The focus on chemistry and material science has the potential for significant business impact,
  • The speakers illustrated specific applications in drug discovery and logistics optimized through quantum computing.
